Elec Window mech jammed?

Over the past three weeks or so I've noticed my (drivers side) window seemed to show signs of "straining" as it opened and closed. This morning I thought I wouldn't get it closed. it would slow to a stop, I'd move it down an inch, cross my fingers and press up. I managed to close it this way. Once I got home this evening I thought I'd try it again. It opened but really wouldn't close this time. Pressing the up button while manually pulling/grabbing the window up didn't help at all.

To cut a long story short...
I've undone the two bolts at the bottom of the glass to free it from the mech and propped the pane up with wood so that the car is weather proof while standing in my drive. Even without the weight of the window the mech will not move with a button press. I might get a slow creep of an inch or so (up or down) but then stop.

Any ideas? Does this suggest a burned out motor? Could it be, just a squirt of oil in the right place will free things up?

There are no "tick, tick" sounds like some have talked about with faulty windows.

Oh yeah - I found a small green 1" or so long piece of plastic in the bottom of the door. (plastic as in polythene, rubbery plastic)... a clue?

(Please don't say big bills  )

Thanks for the suggestion but I think my problem is different as all the metal bits seem to be in place.

I'm going to have a go at this myself. It wont involve specialist tools or anything - not exactly a cam belt change afterall! I can imagine I'll be taking the car with the door in bits to my service chap, but its worth a try :)

all suggestions welcome of course and I'll update when when I know more.

Right,
I've got the whole window mech out of the door

It looks perfectly fine and nothing appears seized or broken.

If I have it on my knee with it electrically connected up to the door and press the up/down button I can get very tiny movements but little else (It would show as about 1 or 2mm window travel).

I'm guessing this means the motor has "gone".

The motor looks to be riveted onto the mech so does this mean a whole new mech and motor?

Where can I get one of these?? (via internet?)

before I buy one is there anything else I should check? It can't be something "electrical" somewhere else could it?

Come on folks I'm sure there's a GTV door and window expert out there :)

TIA

Afraid that the motor is not repairable, the magnets are glued to the motor casing and these come unstuck. Even if you could restick them you could never get it all back together due to the way it's put together.

You have to buy the whole thing but don't worry - second hand ones are readily available from places like breakersyard.com and similar, do a google. Cost about £50 - £60. There is one site, may even be the one above, not sure, that lets you put in what you want and then breakers will e mail you with details.

New ones are about £120.00 from someone like EB Spares.

Do a Thread search on this, lots of info on here. Regarding putting things back together, a few frustrations can occur. If you get the bowden cable between the inside door handle and the lock even slightly out of position it will appear that the lock is seized, even the key will not turn it. Check at everything at every stage of reassembly, not difficult but a little extra time spent checking may save you having to pull it apart again.

Good Luck.

The latest on my window mechanism problem...

Just before I ordered a new mech I thought I'd test for sure that there was no issue regarding electrical power delivery to the motor. I thought I'd connect the motor to another battery and see what happens. The result was the same: motor not turning just the odd grown.

Being the inquisitive type, I wondered what exactly was inside that metal box that contained the motor so I tried to remove it but couldn't get it off properly. I bashed it back on with a hammer.

I don't know why but I just had to see once more that it wouldn't work before it went into the bin, so i connected up to my spare battery. And blow me down it worked. And it seems to work fine perfectly.

So the conclusion:

If your window motor/mech seems to be dead, give it a good tw*t with a hammer before you give it up to car-part heaven.

Like the style, you should go for a job in F1 with that kind of resourcefulness,
