I have just taken my beloved 166 super to the garage as I have a noise that i thought sounded like the 'tappets'......
My mech recons it's the blummin water pump.....
Only had the cambelt done last year at a SPECIALIST!!!!!!!!(£550)
and they never advised me to have it done at the same time....
although I thought it was the 2.5 pump that lets go when the impeller spins on the shaft because its feeble plastic, whereas the 3.0 has a metal impeller and is more robust.
Nope. My 3.0 Super had a cracked plastic impeller. I had the cambelt done, was advised (and would have asked anyway) for the water pump to be changed and found out that under load the impeller wouldn't be turning.
On the contrary, Geoff, you should be warning others about such sloppy dealers. It's very bad service and will be expensive for you to fix. It should also make you think about what else they didn't check/replace at the time (tensioner, idllers??). Why should someone else suffer the same fate? It's got nothing to do with 'name calling'. There should be a (long) list of such dealers on this forum and then perhaps they wouldn't get so much business and would smarten up their acts.
Geoff,
I was also advised to change to a pump wih a metal impeller and found that the plastic impeller on mine had small cracks in it when I had it changed at 120k.
I'm slightly confused about the sound, I would expect a whining sound from something that rotates and a tapping from something that 'goes up and down.
We heard a clattering noise for a while before - morelike a loose cover than tappets. Couldn't find the source, then when he & Mum were going on holiday the bearing collapsed entirely - enough to throw the aux belt off.
Dougie does the water pump vary from year to year ?
or are all years plastic impellers?
my 166 is a late 2000.....would it be just a standard 2000 gtv water pump ?
I think all 166 have the plastic impeller pump but not 100%, I assume my 05/2003 reg. has and will upgrade when required - Alfa decided the GTV needed the metal one even though it is the same engine!
I had mine changed at 120k with the cambelt. It was still ok then. The risk is overheating, you should notice it so it won't be terminal but it will take the car off the road, I would risk it and wait.
My car was overheating due to radiator failure, a common fault and not hard to fix.
regards
Mike
