These are getting rare now as phase 1 owners have probably got a spare like me. Try clover breakers they seem reliable. Have you tried resetting yours with trw2 scan software. There is a member on here that can do it for you by post. Good luck
As far as I know, as long as the numbers of airbags / belt pretensioner and the connector
is the same for the TRW units it is a straight swap, only with the old Becker unit you have
to change/modify the first part of the wiring harness as it uses common earth (-) for the airbags and also between the pretensioners and the connector between Becker ecu and
wiring harness differs from TRW.
apologies for the tardy reply…..busy week.
I'm going to hold out for a 2nd hand unit. initial enquiries show nothing available at the moment in the UK so next step is to try the continent. Thanks for the info on the other part numbers.
I have been in contact with Alastpa 's contact in South Africa re the option of repairing my own unit.
The passenger side on/off switch Ph2 just toggles between two different resistance values. You can probably solder a suitable resistor on the inside of the connector and use it for a Ph1. I would love to try that !
The TRW2Scan software can be configured to read extended error codes of an internal error in the 60625181: "Index of defective devices". That would give you an idea of what's wrong with the unit, but still it's a little tough to do a DIY repair.
I have a 60625181 unit here with a "Lamp circuit" error, but no idea how to repair it.

Did some more digging on this and it seems doable to convert a 60664500 to fit instead of a 60625181.
If anyone has a spare 60664500 for a resonable price I'll be interested. I can get one on Ebay for €35 incl shipping so it has to be better than that !

Hi redtop. You being the airbag ECU guru, I wonder if you have come across any way to repair the 181 ECU. I have 3 which have ECU errors or can't communicate errors. Would be nice to get them back into circulation.
I really don't have enough electronic skills to be able to do fault finding on ECUs.
It's possible to upload new software to the microcontroller. I've done that. That way you can clear a crash, and it might cure a "no communication" problem, but as long as you can get used units for a reasonable sum it's really too much work.
Converting a 60664500 for use in a ph1 should be fairly easy:
Mount a resistor to simulate the passenger airbag switch (Pin 5 to 24. Have to check for value).
Connect the diagnostic line ground internally and disconnect from pin (Pin 8)
Eventually you must connect something on pin 20, (passenger airbag disabled warning light). Must be tested if that's needed.
One other idea i have is to take a broken 181 (or other airbag ECU with the same connector) and replace the electronics with a timing circuit that lights up the airbag light for a few seconds when you turn on the ignition. We can call it a "MOT ECU". :biglaugh:
Mot ECU. That's sneaky, I like that. Probably means no airbags in an accident but seeing as all our airbags are over 10 years old, they might not deploy properly anyway.
Thank you, but I'm after the electronic control unit (ECU) for the airbag system. I'ts located under the back seat on a GTV, and somewhere similar on a Spider.
I do not think we need worry us about air bags that does not go puff when needed, I have seen some almost 20 years old do it in a proper manner when there were a demands on them to go puff.
