Jubilee Clips - Why not to use on radiator hoses!

The link below might be from an American forum but it gives sound advice on the cooling system.

Beware! Using the "wrong" hose clamps on radiator hoses can destroy your radiator. | PriusChat

See post #3 motorweek.org You Tube link. The explanation about using worm drive clamps (Jubilee Clips) starts at 1:47

I know the temptation to use Jubilee clips is because they are readily available and easy to use but they are not designed to cater for the expansion and contraction that takes place on the cooling system, and IMHO they are ugly and detract from our beautiful engines. They are more at home inside a washing machine where they can't be seen.

I used mikalor clamps when I replaced my cooling system - are these viewed as no good also? They are a fair bit wider than a normal jubilee clamp and appeared to be shaped well to spread their load evenly, across the wider cross section. No problems with them yet 18 months on but am I waiting for a disaster to strike?

I've never had a problem with Jubilee clips.
But I'm sure some people will over-tighten them, causing a problem.
Those people are only save with a non-adjustable clip, which is why the production line uses them... (also because they are cheaper...)

I've never had a problem - I think you're right, over-tightening is probably the main cause of problems.

Cheaper & quicker to fit.

Hi All

I started this thread to highlight the possible consequence of using Jubilee Clips on the cooling system. They are not ideal to use as they do not allow for expansion and contraction and can be easily over-tightened. Developing slight leak(s) will give cause for further tightening to the clamp thus causing possible failure to the hose or radiator inlet/outlet

I am in the process of changing my radiator and would like to use original parts as fitted. Visa E clamps used on the cooling system, and Clic-R clamps on the air intake. Both are manufactured by a French company [http://www.caillau.com/products.php?ln=en&mn=clic]Caillau However, I have searched all day on the net without success to find a supplier(s). I have been to two main dealers and even they can't get them

I have had to compromise and buy the following:
Mikalor Worm Drive Constant Tension - S-Band which caters for expansion and contraction.

I can hide the worm drive(s) from sight on the cooling system but I wouldn't want to use them on the air intakes. IMHO they don't look nowhere near as nice as the Clic-R. I had better make sure I look after my originals.

I'm with David C on this one, as I have also used worm drive jubilee type hose clips on virtually every car I have ever owned, when the need arose, with no prtoblems.

As was mentioned though, if they are overtightened they bite too deeply into the hose iteself with subsequent bulging of the hose, which can fracture the interwoven strengthening material as well :tut:

Best practice, tighten securely by feel, and if a small leak is found after running up to temperature, just tighten the worm drive screw a tadge more?

Hi sensingsys spankdanny

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the Clic clamps are the wrong type and size and do not come large enough to fit the air intakes.
As I have said, I searched all day yesterday for a supplier of Clic-R clamps without success. I have sent the French manufacturer an email asking them to identify suppliers. I don't hold much hope of them responding... they will not be interested in me as an individual wanting one or two clamps when they mass produce millions to supply to car manufacturers.

Phil

edit: I'm also annoyed at Alfa Romeo main dealers for not being able to supply original parts that is common to all their cars.

Hi wafc2001

Thanks for the link.

Search

It looked promising at first as it lists the larger sizes 70mm to 250mm but shows a picture of a basic Clic clamp. When you click for further details it returns a basic Clic clamp with smaller sizes, although they are calling them Clic-R. Something is wrong with their website. Would need to check with them first before buying.
