Well after rejoining the ranks of Alfa owners with a new GT I find myself wanting a classic. Having owned three Suds, two Juliettas, a 33and an Arna (yes I know) some years ago I have fond memories of the Sud, blagging down country lanes with the windows open listening to the exhaust crackle everytime I backed off I need to get myself another preferably a TI.
So the question is who knows of any decent ones for sale, I don't have the time for a full resturation but don't mind anything that needs mechanical work.

pm alfffa , he has (had?) a black sud ti he wants to sell, iv'e been to have a look, needs a bit of welding to the n/s inner wing & the rear jacking points but is a nice complete car in black. give up on trying to find one that doesn't need work, there aren't any this side of 4 figure sums! ;)

be carefull spending that kind of money on a car that HASN'T been welded, you might end up with some bills soon , seems a lot of money for that sprint (if your talking the one on ebay) , i would say get one from an enthusiast so all the work has been done

That's my intention, to buy one from an enthusiast with documented repairs/restoration. I know all about corrosion on Suds as i worked for an Alfa dealership when they were still being sold and did lots of welding on my own three suds. You think the sprint on ebay is too expensive then ?
I'm in no hurry though so will spend as much time looking as it takes. I will wander around at N.A.D looking and asking questions (maybe even one for sale there ?)

The Sprint on E bay has to be worth a look. It is expensive but relate its cost to the cost of extras on a new car you may have just purchased. It is about the price of the sat nav/comms pack on a 5 series BMW.
After just finishing refurbishing (is it ever finished?) my Sud:), the advice 'always buy the best you can afford' springs to mind.
You can easily spend a few hundred pounds and then thousands getting it right.
Once you start on a project only the best is good enough! And it costs!!
I enjoyed refurbing mine but it tooks hundreds of hours all of which stopped me worrying about work and was a great outlet and kept me sane. Without creating the time it would not be a labour of love.
Whatever Sud you buy it is now getting old and will need some love and attention to keep it on form, but that is part of the appeal.
My other cars are just machines and go to the main dealer for servicing and I pay to have them washed.
I would have a good look at the Sprint on e bay and if you purchase it make sure you give it the best re rustproofing you can afford.
If you buy it bring it to NAD I would love to see it. Good luck.

to be sure of getting what you want i would wait till nad then get one from there (or have a good look to decide it is what you want) :) if you would prefer a sud then with your budget in mind you sholudn't have too much problem getting one that's had all the hard work done, see attached, that one do you? , no idea how much that would cost though  stunning though :p

ref the sprint on ebay, its not a case of it not being worth the money, it could be worth a look, as long as its solid underneath :( as you rightly point out they have a habit of rusting! if it hasn't had any welding then chances are it will need some. be sure the jacking points/sills/inner sills/inner wings are SOLID  no point spending top money on one that looks shiny with low mileage without being sure. after all it is coming up to being 25 years old :D

Hi Chris,

I have a Sud that might suit your requirements.

It's just undergone a full restoration and has covered less than 500 miles since completion.

It wasn't originally a UK car and has come from a hot climate so didn't have huge rust problems. Sills and screen surround etc were all perfect. It did have a lot of dents, scratches, vandal damage etc.

It was stripped to a bare shell for a full respray. It had brand new front wings, two new doors and a secondhand bootlid and bonnet fitted. These were all vandalised.

The car was repainted in it's original colour of Nero black. It's had 6 coats of paint and 2 coats of lacquer. Each was flatted down by hand between coats. Mirror like finish. New headlights (cost a fortune!) The underside has been sealed properly. No rot anywhere. Underneath is spotlessly clean. Never goes out in the rain. Waxoyled to the hilt!

The engine is a 1.7 twin carb from a late Sprint. It has only covered 21,000 miles and is a fit as a butchers dog so to speak. Has had a brand new distributor fitted as the balance weights inside the old unit were playing up. New belts and tensioners. Oil is spotless. Doesn't burn or leak any as you would imagine. Ansa equal length downpipes leading to AR Green Cloverleaf exhaust.

The gearbox is original to the car. It has covered 64,000 miles. I overhauled it by replacing all gaskets and filling with synthetic oil. All the gear linkage bushes were replaced. Doesn't crunch into any gears and has a really nice change. New clutch plate and release bearing. Master cylinder and slave cylinder overhauled with new seals. New CV Boots.

The calipers front and rear were overhauled with new seal kits. New discs and pads front and rear. New copper brake lines and new braided hoses. New master cylinder. DOT 5.1 fluid. New handbrake cable.

All of the suspension components were shot blasted and powder coated. All the bushes were replaced with genuine AR bushes (never again!) It's running with Koni adjustable dampers. Set hard at the moment - feels a bit like riding a horse when pressing on! New strut bearings fitted.

New track rod ends. 5 revolution 14" wheels painted the same shade of black as the car with a polished rim. Lacquered on top. 5 x new Pirelli P6000's on the rims. 1 x new Pirelli P6000 as a second spare.

Interior is from a Sprint Green Cloverleaf. I thought the green carpets etc would make an excellent contrast from the black exterior. Period Blaupunkt radio. Brand new genuine Alfasud leather steering wheel.

I've owned the car for 7 years.
6 year restoration at considerable cost.
Been back on the road 1 year - less than 500 miles use.
64,000 miles
1 or 2 previous owners (can't be sure but certainly no more)
12 months MOT
6 months tax

Requires:

Stone chip to OSR arch touching in
Rear Koni's need overhauling (£50 each unit)
Bush or joint on steering column replacing (will supply)
A good home!

It was featured in the AROC magazine in the review of the coucours at last years Alfa Day. It is also in the current AROC mag in the Sud news section.

I'll take it to the concours next week.

If you think you can look after it, please let me know. I think I'm ready to sell it - though I keep changing my mind!

Mark
