i am trying to replace big ends or at least inspect bottom end on 166 2.5 v6. but there is one 11 mm bolt which i cant get to on sump.
it looks like the oil filter mount has to come off.
what i'd like to know is whether that can be removed ok with engine still attached to car or is there an easier way to gain access to this bolt. any help much appreciated.

thanks purple, unfortunatly i've given up, i can't budge hub nut and i'm nervous about dropping engine, so tomorrow i will try to get the whole car stretchered to a workshop and let them have a look see.
i hate to give up but i'm putting off a lot of other things i have to do.

drill a few holes in the hub nut and chisel it off if you feel like changing your mind in the morning. Show it who's boss :D

but I agree about being under Milano's finest, it can feel quite uncomfortable when the thought of a V6 on the head starts playing on the mind

sorry for not posting here earlier, but i am still in the process of diagnosing the rattle from my engine, so far she's had new big end shells fitted and an inspection of bottom end. iv'e replaced six hydraulic lifters and fitted new timing belt, checked timing twice and she's had two oil changes and a compression check which went well.
any ideas from anyone? the rattle seems to come up through the top stabiliser mount/cambelt cover bracket.

hmm, maybe, but it sounds more than that, but it could be i suppose, do you know what the tensioner looks like when you turn over the engine? i mean should the positioner marking move back and forth on the tensioner? stationery it comes back to where it should be.
other than that i think i'm going to take the head off and have a look see.

right, well i have the heads off now and i'm in the process of rebuilding them, although i cant really see anything wrong.
the trouble is i turned the bottom end over without the liner stoppers on and noticed the liners move. i hear that there is a seal in the block which can be disturbed. anyone know anything? i dont see anything in the various manuals i have. i wonder if there is a problem weather i can pull the liners right off the top and replace the seals?

Yes. They're not expensive to buy and its not worth the risk. You'll find the liners are difficult to pull out. turn the engine over to raise them above the block deck. I used an oil filter wrench to pull them clear last time. That worked quite well.

Gosh Michaelito Dont take this the wrong way BUT I am glad that it's not just me that hits all these brick wall.

That is some work you have carried out ...I hope you have it eliminated this time.

Thanks pomeo, yes it's a struggle but i hope at the end it'll be worth it. Anyway i was thinking, if i need to replace these fabled seals there may be an easy way. i.e lift the liners up just enough so they don't come past the rings and then stretch the seals over and down or press out the wrist pin, remove piston and liner together and then replace seals? the funny thing is i made some liner stoppers but never put them on first, uh what a donkey:eek:

I wouldn't, have you got a piston ring compressor or have you put the sump back on?

know the feeling M.

i slackened of the bravos gearbox to move it back to give easy acces to the stubborn bolt.....Yep the |Shrek /Donkey feeling when you realise its the flywheel that is prventing the access.

You assemble and then realise ops forgot this bit.

Thats why I now take photos as I go.

no chris, the sump is on and i need to replace the seals from above i.e either squeeze them down over the liners or take pistons off via wrist pins and then replace seals. or failing that take liners off pistons/rings replace seals and then slide liners back over pistons/rings. i mean i've done it with four cylinder motorcycle engines so how can it be harder with one liner?

I just got the o rings today, pulled a liner up, made a hook gadget and pulled an old o ring out, i see why you should replace them now!
it snapped so easily. I reckon i can slide the new ones down over the liners and into position with some rubber/nylon lube(not ky):) I think maybe i made a lot of fuss over nothing.
