which cars do you drive and why?
I drive a 2002 156 2.0 JTS Veloce. I opted out of the company car scheme when I changed jobs this year and fancied something different. Having driven oil burners for 10 years (A4, 320d, Pug 406, etc) and having always admired the 156, I saw one for sale on ebay one Sunday night. I put in a silly bid never really expecting to win it!! Guess what – yup – I spoke those immortal words to Mrs C – “Darling, I think I’ve just bought a car”. Since collecting her (the car!) I have fallen in love with Alfa’s
Mrs C drive a RAV4 (Yaaaawwwwnnnn!)
Are you a real passionate for Alfa Romeo?
I wasn’t, although I’ve always loved my cars. I suppose I knew all the horror stories, but TBH mine has 103,500 miles and runs beautifully.
What or how started your passion for Alfa Romeo and…
….do you think it’s fundamental to own one to have the passion?
No, I don’t think you have to own one to have a passion. I have a passion for pies but dont own a pie shop
That said it probably helps when it comes to looking after an Alfa.
Would you ever consider joining an Alfa Club or are you already a member of one?
I’m not and I suppose if I had a more classic Alfa then I might. Mine is very much a day-to-day car that is used for work and pleasure (my pleasure mainly as Mrs C doesn’t like driving it!!!)
What do you like most about Alfas?
The fact that it attracts admiring glances and has a heritage. Cant really say that about Japanese/Korean cars. Yes some German cars can boast a heritage but they have become so characterless. Sometimes its nice to have that individuality.
What do you like least about Alfas?
As a sweeping statement I suppose it would be their reputation – which in my case is unfounded. As mine is 5 years old I haven’t had to experience the local Stealer, and as the nearest one is 40 miles away – I wont be doing so either.
What would be your dream cars?
1956 Chevrolet Corvette
AC Cobra
(I know!! – but I’m a sucker for those OTT American muscle cars)
Jensen CV8
Alfa Spider (any!!)
What car would you least like to drive?
Anything that is lifeless and soleless…
Like a Toyota RAV4 for example…
For you, what’s the most popular thread on AO?
What would be your ideal drive in an Alfa (destination, passenger, driving music, etc)?
Anything amusing – like IPT!!
Those fantastic roads around The Gorge de Verdon in the South of France with Mrs C (complete with sick bag!) and then over to Grasse and then down to the coast for Soupe de Poisson and loads of local Rose!! Stereophonics – You Gotta Go There To Come Back
Any humorous Alfa or car-related stories you wish to share with us?
Was doing the Beamish Rally on year in a VW Kubelwagen that me and my 2 brothers had restored. We had replaced the brakes all round and added spacers so the new T&C tyres didn’t rub the inner wheel arches. We had made the spacers out by burning the inner circle out of 4 old wheels. As the stud holes were too small we made them bigger. What we hadn’t allowed for was the fact that the spacers vibrated and sheered of the studs on one side. One minute we are flying along, the next minute we were almost flying off the road at Snake Pass!! Had some real aluminium ones made after that. Not recommended.
What interests do you have outside of Alfas?
Playing the guitar – badly
Playing golf – very badly
Rugby – cant play anymore – too may knocks over the years and the back/knees/neck won’t take it
Music
Tell us something nobody knows about you. (E.g. special skill, ever been on TV, etc)
If I told you that then everybody would know it????
Oh go on then…
I have no big toes nails
Do you have a party trick? If so what is it?
The only thing I can think of is I have been known to light the odd fart at parties. Always good for a laugh!!
What do you like most about the Alfaowner forum? Any favourite threads, episodes or people?
Leading question!...
It doesn’t take itself to seriously.
If you had £50,000 you had to spend in 72 hours, how would you choose to spend it?
Depends which head I was wearing at the time…
Mr Sensible – reduce mortgage and a holiday
Mr Usual head – Brera or GT, new guitar, holiday, bunch of flowers for Mrs C!!!
