newbie with some GTV questions

Hi all,

just registered as I'm looking for a reasonably priced useable early GTV, circa 97/98. My car history has revolved around german marques, currently driving an old beater of a mk2 golf gti to work, owned a few early porsches and the current winter project is a 1971 911.

that's enough about the krauts chance I was passing a 2nd hand dealer on saturday with a nice looking P reg gtv for sale. I want to replace my gti beater for something with a bit more style, comfort and handling and I've always loved the look of the GTV so decided to make some more enquiries, took it for a test drive and well.... I think I've fallen.... I went back past on sunday with the other half for her stamp of approval and the car had sold :-(. for the rest of the weekend I had my eyes peeled to see another gtv on the road.... you know what I drove over 350 miles up/down the A1 and i did not see 1 single gtv on the road...

I've since seen another car advertised with 92k, which has apparently had the head replaced at 90k (so I'm assuming the belts etc would have been replaced at the same time), the rear suspension arms have been done, 4 new tyres, AC does not work (re-gass???) it also has a very comprehensive history with loads and loads of bills with it. I would like to have a good look around the car later this week so was wondering if there is anything other than these areas I should be looking for as a sign of impending wallet lightening. It seems that two of the big things that can go have been taken care of. The seller describes the car as honest, will put 12mnths mot on it and says if he didnt think it is what he says it is he would just auction it.

Also wondering if there are any GTV drivers out there who use their cars daily and roughly how much you guys spend on running costs, my mileage will be around 100 per week, plus some fun miles some weekends, so at a guess around 8000 per year, with regular oil checks/changes she should be up to it right?

Anyway I think I've gone on for long enough, if anyone can give me some pointers/bargaining power when I go see the car that would be great...

Many thanks one & all

Re: newbie with some GTV questions

Welcome. I probably do around the same mileage you will be doing (perhaps a little more) and tend to put about £20-£25 of fuel in each week. Most of my mieage is very short journies aroun the city though

Check the rear suspension, check it's idling ok so that there are no problems with the MAF or throttle valve and other than that just the normal checks that you'd do with any motor

Could I not tempt you to buy mine? registered late 99, Only 42k on the clock, in black with the autodelta sports kit on it. I'm changing it for the V6 model. Can't wait!
