CAM belt!!!

Hello all...

I am a new member and was wondering if anyone else has recently had a CAM belt failure?

I have a 4 year old 156 and on Friday the cam belt snapped!! My local dealer are quoting me 2K - 5K depending on what needs to be replaced. After reading other postings on this site I see that this has been going on for some time! Has anyone had any help from Alfa HQ on this issue?

Re: CAM belt!!!

Yes, I got the full cost of the repair from them. this depends on a couple of things though. You must have had regular servicing carried out, and depending on whether it is petrol or diesel you need to observe teh correct cambelt change interval. For petrols except from the V6 this is every 36K. For diesels and the petrol V6 it is 72K.

Re: CAM belt!!!

Sorry to hear about you cam belt woes.

Where in the country are you? Maybe someone could recommend an independent specialist that could repair you car much cheaper than a dealer.

Re: CAM belt!!!

Hi Paul J,

Thanks for your response...

I have a full Alfa service history, and until Saturday morning when I went in to see the dealer about the belt snapping I was still working on the 72K change interval. My Dealer then told me that Alfa had issued a change to the Cam Change interval late last year (72K to 36K). I had my last service at this dealer in Feb and they never checked the belt or advised that I should have it changed.

I have spoken to Alfa UK today and they say that it is quite common and that their claims department are working on this!

Re: CAM belt!!!

Sounds to me as though you have got a good chance of making a claim against the dealer and or Alfa UK if the dealer did your service in February and did not advise a belt service.

Good luck

Re: CAM belt!!!

I don’t answer all of them, just try and help where I can.

No sign of the trailer, I can’t believe some one would nick it from outside our workshop in board daylight when it was attached to the back of our Discovery. I only bought it about 6 weeks ago and it cost over 3 grand, I have been mad about it all day.

I phoned the place where I bought it and they said I would have to wait 8 weeks for a replacement.

Re: CAM belt!!!

Thanks Ned, I hope so too. I find it hard to believe that Alfa have known about this issue for so long and yet dealers are still not actively telling owners about the problem!

Re: CAM belt!!!

The thing I don’t get is that had they told you they could have done more work and charged you more money, don’t they want the work?
