3-year lurker says hello at last
Back in 2012 I joined this forum as I was looking for a 147 JTDM 16v and wanted to know as much as I could about them. I very nearly bought one, from kevjtd, but the sale fell through because of a complete a*se on eBay failing to buy my existing car after winning the auction.
I've dropped in to Alfaowner quite often, meanwhile, but only in read-only mode. The Alfa itch didn't go away.
That is about to change because I have now bought a '58 147 Q2, although not collected it yet. It really has just one problem, about which I'll post in the 147 forum. That problem is why it was cheap.
I have a lot of mech experience, having worked on numerous bikes and cars for 40 years, including complete engine rebuilds, tuning and even a few gearboxes. I also tend to keep vehicles for a very long time (20+ years) and maintain them to last. I'm OCD about Copaslip where sensible, because I know it's me who'll benefit later. But I have no experience of diesels and very little of modern computerised, sensors-for-everything stuff. And Alfa seem to be almost as bad as Honda at designing engine bays for people with 3 4foot arms and Capuchin monkey hands. Still, how hard can it be?
I am allergic to franchised dealers and much of the rest of the motor trade. Someday, somewhere else, I'll explain why (12,000 words). If I do end up having to get work done that I can't do myself - and it is cold outside - it will be with one of the independents who have established such good reputations hereabouts.
