Red Face Another new member (though you probably get that a lot :))

Top of the day, ladies and gents!

My name is... let it be Ailierynn for now, and yes, I'm an addict. Alfa addict (this "drug" does work fast, doesn't it? ).

Well, the beginning of this story is that, after some long years of contemplation, I've finally decided to get a drivers licence. Didn't take me too long, considering I'm no longer eighteen, by a long stride. But, in the end, it was time to get my own set of wheels.

Back when I was young and foolish(tm), I was looking at that three letter manufacturer from Germany... then another one, with a ladies' name, and so on. Tastes changed, as times passed. When I finally had the right to drive a car, my eyes were set on a respectable Volvo S80. And, just as I was about to get one, I got bitten by a bug. An Alfa bug.

Since my instructor had a Fiat, I decided, out of curiosity, to take a look at Italian car offers - just for a good laugh... or so I though. Until I saw her. Need I say Volvo got forgotten then and there?

Three days later (or was it five?), it was done, and now there is another 159 (1.9 JTDm), moving happily in our rainy country. But, I guess, this story is typical for Alfa owners. You buy a German car by reading all the stats, then deciding to get one. You buy a Scandinavian car by reading all the crash test reports, then decide. With this beauty, it was a "decide, then don't even try to justify" affair. Though, have to admit, with its white all leather interior, it could put an S80 Summum to shame.

All the colleagues thought me crazy and tried to persuade me not to do it. All but one - not only did he help me get through all the paperwork in a day, he even "escorted" me on the way home.

There is a minor (I hope) glitch with the front right door window mechanism, and there is a thread here about how to get at it - that's how I found this forum. Considering that at least a bit of my education is related to electrical engineering, and I work with nice little automated flying thingies, I do hope I can fix it myself.

At any rate, sorry for being overly emotional and uninformational, but there is a distinctly wide smile straight from one ear all the way to the other. Right from the first minute driving it. That steering, mmm...

Oh, and if anyone from Latvia is reading this, sorry in advance for being a new driver and occasionally making mistakes. It is, after all, my first car. A shame there would probably be few enough "Alfists" in our country to count on my fingers (I know I am exaggerating, but still, seeing three alfas in a day - the day I bought it, actually, is a rare thing).

Ok, here's one last bit. Just don't call me names, I know this is an Alfa forum, and, after all, I do love the car (and, most certainly, it is much closer to my dream car than the Volvo I was going to get). Here's the kick - my dream car is probably still the Lotus Esprit S4 / somewhere around year 1995. But that would be so much less practical on our somewhat peculiar roads (for every hole there is an anti-hole, or a bump, somewhere else, probably a few metres down the road, waiting patiently for the unwary), not to mention a 'slightly' higher appetite for fuel. In other words, I am happy with the Alfa, and now I have two favourite manufacturers instead of one. Isn't that great?

Oh, and sorry for the shoddy weather in that photo.

Thanks everyone, I sure will check out all the tech stuff here. Speaking of which, winter's coming, so I've put some new tyres and have scheduled oil replacement this wednesday (including the filter). Anything else will probably have to wait till spring.

Took her on a longer trip this weekend, loved the way she held the road at higher speeds, but wasn't quite as amazed by how I felt every bump. Guess, it comes with the "sports" territory. Ah well... At least I know I'm still hugging that road like crazy, instead of having a smooth ride straight into the nearest tree.

Been a while, thought I might as well post an update. Still doing ok, smiling with every kilometer, and there have been plenty, 7k since November. As expected, took some work to get her into a proper condition, and some more still on the way. Done so far:
- 2 bearings in the gearbox
- new clutch
- new bearing in the front left axle
- changed a pair of rear stabilizer links
- changed all filters

Now there are a few cosmetic things left, front right window regulator (scheduled for a replacement tomorrow), and I intend to install some mud flaps (sadly, our roads without those would mean yearly resprays). That's about it. Not counting a new set of Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance, total expenses are around 1k so far.
