Alfa 156 1.8TS

New Member - 156 owner

Hi, just wanted to say hello as a new member to this forum. I have owned my 156 1.8TS since new in 1998. Lovely to drive, but not without it's problems - squeaky front bushes pretty much from the start and a new engine at 40000 miles. Recent troubles have included rust (significant welding needed around front suspension mount) and now, it has a dramatic loss of power above 3800RPM.

Since I had a new timing belt it's been totally gutless. The garage who fitted it say that the timing is spot-on and that maybe it needs new plugs. It seems to accelerate fine to 3800, but above that it's absolutely dead. Am I right in thinking that power would be down across the rev range if plugs were the problem?

Welcome to AO...

You might have a mad MAF sensor (detects airflow and density).

The sensor is located just above the airbox on the way to the inlet manifold, try disconnecting it and driving without it. The engine will default to some factory settings. If this is an improvement, you likely need a new MAF and they are around £80 or so for a T.S. engined car I think.

Best of luck with it

Re: New Member - 156 owner

I it was fine beforehand, I would want the timing re-checked? But it could be other reasons, for poor performance. Timing would be my first port of call.: Could be to be a tooth or so out.:
