New to the marque...

Greetings fellow owners.

After admiring the marque for many years I have allowed my heart to overule my head and instead of buying a nice little ford I have bought a 2001 156 sportwagon selespeed. I love the car especially the gearbox, but I'm a realistic sort of bloke and I realise that this vehicle probably won't be as cheap and easy to look after as a 'normal' car.
The car shows 43,000 miles and has a full dealer history including cambelts at 41K so I'm not expecting to blow it up just yet! But I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me on caring for this lovely machine, it is as sweet as a nut at the moment and I'd like to keep it that way. I would also appreciate some advice as to the best deals on insurance/warranties etc.

Hello and welcome, there are not that many thing that go wrong on the 156, the known problems are

squeaky suspension ( front upper wishbones )
twin sparks have known variator issues (sounds like a diesel on start up for 5-10 seconds)

as long as you keep an aye out on your engine oil levels (as they are known to drink abit, although when i had my twin spark it wasn't bad) and keep on top of the servicing (cam belts every 36K(?) is a real must!) you should be alright

edit: the running costs and most of the parts arn't that high either!

As long as you look after her mate, she'll be fine. My 156 was brilliant to me, but I sold it and now I'm lonely.

Welcome to the forum though bud,

Re: New to the marque...

Modern Alfas tend to be as good as any car these days, sure they need a wee bit more care and can drink oil heavier than most. I had a mate who didn't look after his 156 selespeed at all, in fact ran it dry of oil and ended up knackering the enine completly. So as long as you take care of her like you should you'll have many more years of fun motoring ahead.

P.S Love the look of the 156 sportwagon, looks better then most other hatchbacks on the road! very jealous mate.

I had a 156 Sillispeed but didn't really like the box, I must admit.

Listen to what them above are saying and embrace it.

Check oil levels (engine and gearbox) EVERY week.

Find a GOOD Alfa specialist in your part of the country (ask on the 156 tech pages) and establish a relationship.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD BATTERY ON BOARD! I would recommend a Bosch Gel. Don't fit no cheap crap.

Be aware that belts and stuff is 36,000 or 3 years.

But most of all ENJOY!!!!!
