Anyone got any ideas on this problem..
I've had a 156 sportwagen for a year and a half- No real problems apart from my belt going (which now I think back on it was a real problem!)
A few weeks ago I'm driving on the motorway quite merrily when the speedo drops to zero. First I though the engine had died, but realised rather quickly that there was no drop in performance..
So I continued driving and the speedo returns to normal, but then dropped to zero again (you get the idea!).
I get to work and park up normally. When I try to restart the engine later- nothing.. It clicks away quite merrily, but no ignition. Battery seems good, as lights and radio work..
I get towed to my garage where they think its the starter, so this gets replaced.
Few days later same thing happens again..
Back to the garage and another starter (FOC this time!)... However guess what- The problem has continued. Now I guess its not the starter
, but would like to have an idea of what it might be before handing it over for God knows what checks..
The odd thing is, I've a strong suspicion that this only happens on long journeys where I've been sitting in traffic- short journeys are no problem. Car starts again quite happily.
Once its died if I leave the car for a few hours it'll start again..
Would like an idea of what this might be and how much I'm looking at to get it sorted...been looking thro the threads, but not found any matches...Again, not certain if the speedo and starting failure are indications of the same problem or two seperate issues..
