1.8 chugging when cold or over 5,000 RPM

Hard to describe this problem, but when I press the accelerator the car just chugs along from cold. I'm hearing the odd popping as if there's a hole in the exhaust. When the car warms up, the problem at low revs goes away, but I get the same chugging again above 5000 revs (very interesting when overtaking ) - Car accelerates then pulls back. Any help appreciated!

Is it misfiring? Or just rough.

Can you give more details on the car. Mileage etc...

If you revs are dropping off after 5K then its likely the AFM is duff.

Re: 1.8 chugging when cold or over 5,000 RPM

Thanks... the Car has 75k miles.. No major problems or work done so far, Plugs done at 60k. No modifications or upgrades. Confusing that I'm getting the problem at cold at all revs and warm only over 5000... The mechanic was going to start with cleaning the throttle body and resetting the ECU.

Re: 1.8 chugging when cold or over 5,000 RPM

Welcome to AO

First port of call would be to unplug MAF sensor (between airbox and throttle body), and see if it improves slightly. If it does, you need a new MAF. Not too costly and easy to fit.

Be wary when cleaning the throttle body, people have done it on here and caused a whole load more problems - I'm not sure exactly on the details but they have not done something or other and so the car idles high. Not much help there I guess! If your mechanic is not an Alfa specialist I would advise looking on this forum and finding out where one is close to you, as most faults are often 'common', and you can pay loads for a normal mechanic to diagnose what a specialist would know in 10 seconds.

Another thing to check is the pipes between airbox and throttle body. Any splits?

Hope this helps
