Hello Damian, welcome etc.
I've been chasing a similar problem round my Rover.
I changed the water pump (cambelt was due) - no change.
I changed the thermostat which has made things a little better.
I will replace the cap (should've done this to start with really- particularly if losing coolant) yours will be on the white header tank.
I think mine really needs a new radiator (they last 90 - 100k miles).
Other possible but unlikely causes are:
Plug gaps too wide. (careful with the TS plugs- they break.)
Head gasket blown, (possible if you are losing coolant)
Fuel mix lean, (unlikely)
Ignition timing wrong. (very unlikely)
In hindsight I should've inspected the radiator before doing anything.
