Hi Alfa lovers
1st posting just t say hi. Been around alfas for a few years, my parents had a 1.6 Guilietta and a Spider many years ago n my first 2 cars were Alfasuds. After many years away I bought a 156 Selespeed sportwagon 5 years ago and have done 116,000 miles. Now the fun begins! The car is beautiful and does everything I need from being great to drive to lugging loads and people.
The only problem in the beginning was with the gearbox, of course, but once I found an Alfa garage that knew what it was doing all was easily resolved. In the first 70k it was off the road 3 times till I found Alfa in Bolton who said, ' always check the relay switch first '. Good advice!
I am now hoping for some more good advice. As soon as the weather warms or the car is under strain - climbing the hills in Sheffield where I now live the car heats up and I get a horrible mechanical clattering. Also as soon as you put a/c on the engine heats up.
Last summer I had the cambelt, tensioner, thermostat, water pump and plugs changed with no positive outcome at 97,000 miles. Fluids to aid in de coking the engine, I didn't think thast was a concern in modern engines, was also added/suggested by the alfa garage and an independant. It was ok through the coolness of the winter but the temperature rise and the mechanical clattering has returned with a vengance. Having read a few of the postings, yes the fan always kicks in to bring the temp down until the engine is worked again. And then the clattering begins.
Any advice very much appreciated.
