Re: Newbie 156 GTA owner!
guys for some reason i am unable to post a new topic in the relevant section, so i guess ill just do it here then!
just bought myself a 2003 03 regsitered silver GTA saloon. Its only ever had the 1 owner from new (a 59 year old managing director) who has absolutely loved it from new with no expense spared whatsoever! Its got satnav, bose etc and full black electric leather.
He decided to import the car from Holland through a recommended dealer in the alfa club mag as he couldnt wait for the uk waitlist. As far as i can see this causes no problems and the car is made to full uk spec (checked with alfa themselves).
The only bad point i can see is the mileage at 108000 but its been sat on a motorway its whole life. He has always waited for the car to warm up correctly and has never given it any real welly - amazingly its still on the original clutch!! The clutch even feels like new!! Crazy or what?
From new the car has only ever been run on Selenia racing 10W60 and nothing else. He had it main dealer maintained until 84K after which he went to an independent which was started by two of the dealers technicians! I think the main alfa dealer where it went shut down so he had no other option. They completed the 96 and 108K services and lots of intermediate stuff like oil pipes, wishbones, alternator, exhaust etc etc. There are some big bills!
Apparently the car consumes a 2 litre tub of selenia between the 12K servicing - I've heard that this is on the good side for one of these? The dipstick and engine internals look like new - such to the credit of Selenia oils I guess! He claims the oil consumption has stayed the same since new. It also takes no coolant whatsoever and every electrical item works a treat.
He has just treated it to the 108K service, 4 new Pirelli P-zeros and 1 years MOT and tax, so its good to go.
The things I need to rectify include cambelt due second time (Im using my friend Roger of Powerfiat/PowerGTV fame - he is incredible and the only person I will trust with my Alfa/Fiats!) and what appears to be a slight coolant leak on the top of the radiator (its not leaking as such, but you can visibly see coolant remains).
Does this car sound ok to you guys? Honestly I have had around 30 cars now and this actually feels like new. Are there any issues i need to prepare for? Roger who now owns a 3.0 GTV after selling his Coupe says the V6, if treated carefully, is absolutely bombproof. My BMW parts advisor who used to be an alfa mechanic back in italy says exactly the same.
Personally I think I would prefer a 1 owner GTA with high motorway miles than one thats had three owners all giving it some in their short ownerships - any comments?
Oh, and wheres the best place to get the radiator? I know its Valeo who are OE for the rad and clutch on these. And what about the clutch? Alfa want around £300 for the rad and the same for a clutch. Can anyone point me in the right direction? And is the rad the same as the 2.5 V6?
Many thanks to all of you who contribute. By the way, i have never heard anything quite like this V6, and the drive is the best I've ever had!
