Hi to all.
As the title suggests I am looking for a 156 Sportwagon, and the wife says she will forgive any mechanical issues it gives us as long as it has red leather, which seems a fair deal to me
. Well at least I will be looking once i get back to the UK from our effort to emigrate to New Zealand.
Why an Alfa?? Well I remember when my dad had an Alfasud company car in the seventies and the day he got it ALL the dads in our street took it for a test drive- it was a bit rare back then- so the Alfa bug was born. But somehow I have reached the ripe old age of 38 and still not got round to it. I got close a few years back but needed a "proper" estate for work (by proper i mean large flat boot for use as an electrician's van) so ended up with a Vectra SRI estate
which was almost a looker but was instantly forgettable inside. It was pretty quick though, even with a 1200kg caravan in tow. Then my eldest son moved back home so 6+ seats were required so to address my leather fetish we had a Ford Galaxy diesel auto, which was just so embarrasing that my kids -including said eldest son- would lie down in it to avoid being seen in public. Anyway here we are in our last week in NZ, looking forward to getting back to civilisation (and a choice of decent cars other than old japanese imports).
I am looking at spending up to £3500 and have my eye on a silver 1.8TS. I have looked on Autotrader reviews and have read bits on here re cambelts, wishbones, spare keys etc, so know that it must have a full history and everything must work, but wanted some advice on the best model to go for. I am comparing the 1.8 to the 2.0 Vectra i had , and see that it has 10 more bhp and weighs about 100kg less, but has anyone towed a caravan with one? I dont really want a 2.0 or V6 as I would rather have the economy than the performance, and the diesels, although perfect for towing with all that torque, are too pricey for me.
I have noticed on pictures that some have dents in the backseat leather which i assume is from seatbelts when the seats are folded. Mine will spend a lot of time folded so i'd like to know do the seats fold fully flat or not, and will they crease up nastily like they did in my galaxy?
I know alot of these questions seem trivial but it is fraustrating being 12000 miles away where european cars are 1 in 50, and there are no car supermarkets where i can go and play with the seats etc (unless i want a "Mazda Bongo Frendee" or "Isuzu Mysterious Utility Wizard"- the jap car names here are beyond belief!
Any way will post some stuff soon
