Pistons and Variator Urgent

Against everybodies advice I bought a 2003 Alfa 147 1.6 Tspark Sportivo with 21500 miles last Thursday. My friend had a look at it yesterday and opened the oil lid in the engine while the car was running, and oil came splashing out in what he called "blow back" from the engine. Is this normal or is this due to excessive piston wear? Also when the engine is idling, a diesel noise comes in for about 30 seconds every few minutes. Is this normal or does this mean that the variator is bust or something else? 1 more thing: Should the dealer that sold me the car have ensured that the timing belt etc were changed when they serviced the 147 before selling it to me? I read here that they need to be changed every 36kmiles or 3 years.
Many thanks for any help!

Re: Pistons and Variator Urgent

I am not surprised oil came spashing out....just below the oil filler hole is a cam shaft covered in oil for starters and it is rotating throwing oil about....Take any Alfa and leave the oil filler off and you will have a nicely oil decorated engine bay. If the engine is actually badly worn at 21k miles then it must have actually been thrashed to an inch of it's life. A compression test would be the only real way of telling.

The 'diesel' noise is probably the variator(assuming you dio not have the 105bhp engine) and sounds like it needs replacing. My Variator in my 2002 2.0 TS has done 60,000 miles( it will easly last to second cam belt change) and is still ok so 21k sounds very early. How many services has the car actually had...Just the yearly service. Has the oil be changed recently ??

NB the cam system can also make 'diesel noises if there is a 'faulty' tappet.

I am not sure the seller is a can be held responsible for whether the car has been properly serviced unless you asked and they lied.
At one stage Alfa in the UK used 72,000 miles or 6 years??? as the service interval for cam belts so the car may have been serviced correctly......
