I still have my Series 3 Spider in my garage. This is the third summer without using it, and after a house extension, I am now trying to drum up the enthusiasm to finish putting the engine back in. Any words of encouragement welcome.....
The reason for the stripdown was for a number of reasons. The first was to sort out the nasty noises and 3 cylinder running. The second was to replace the slipping clutch, and the third was to replace the leaking gearbox oil seal (which was partly the reason for the slipping clutch!).
The nasty noise was due to an exhaust valve seat dropping out of the cylinder head. This was rectified by a local automotive engineering company replacing all of the valve seats and valve guides. I also, with help from my retired Fiat mechanic father, had to replace the exhaust camshaft because one of the lobes looked very sorry for itself. The pistons weren't touched - the bores looked good, and so were left well alone.
The car is an American import, made in 1989 and is LHD. I've sorted out the dodgy wiring, replaced the damaged steering box (caused by the previous owner trying to remove the steering wheel with a big hammer...), made new carpets and leather dyed the seats with great results. The bodywork is excellent, due no doubt to the California sun, and whilst stripping out the interior, I found $10 in loose change and 2Kg of sand..........
I'm not currently in the AROC, but will rejoin again at some point soon.
