156 Sportwagon

New to Alfa member

Hello all.

Just made the transition from an Audi A4 that gave up the ghost last week to a 2002 model 2.0 Sportwagon selespeed that I hopefully collect from the dealer on friday this week if they can service it in time.

I'm an Alfa virgin, although a mate has had a 156 1.8 saloon for years and I have always envied his leather interior for the price he paid (Audi's are twice the price for a hint of leather...). So can't wait to get the keys and take it for a spin.

First time in an Auto also, let alone selespeed, but to me the gear level sort of felt like being on a motorcycle with a sequential gearbox so I thought i'd give it a try. I just hope it's reliable as I have been reading several comments for and against the selespeed system on this site over the last few days.

Quick question whilst I am here- the (non-alfa) dealer are going to give it a 40k mile service before I collect it- what should I expect them to carry out so I know when I collect the vehicle they have covered all the necessary areas.

Re: New to Alfa member

Hi LBW and welcome to AO

The selespeed system on my GTA is very similar to a motorcycle gear change. The sequential stick-shift/paddle-shift achieves the same result.

The system is reactive to throttle position, road speed and braking inputs etc and adjusts the up/down change speed accordingly, and also automatically blips the throttle to synchronize revs on down-changes.

I've never liked auto-boxes but the Alfa system leaves the driver in charge, and also offers auto-change if you hit the "City" button.
