My name's Al, aka Brooky 4 ( old xbox gamertag )... I actually signed up last year but haven't found the time to get involved.
I had a look around the forums recently to try & learn about the best combination for shocks & springs and have found the information helpful but the verdicts still out as I only want to spend up to £500 including fitting and thus far haven't found the best way to go about it! I'm not being tight but I really have spent too much money on Alfie... (I know highly original!) already. I started my Alfa love affair at 17 with an Alfasud ti chewing up and spitting out the XR3's and XR2's of the era late 80's and haven't looked back since.(apart from a blip in the mid to late nineties with a couple of BMW 323's and an V5 Audi Coupe.
I've owned the same 1999 3.0 V6 GTV in silver since 2001 and we've certainly had our ups and downs... cambelt tensioners fail as not replaced by previous owner when cambelt changed... new engine please doh! 2nd hand engine installed badly by local garage... head gasket fails within 15 months double doh!. This time I get Alfa to carry out the work to great expense tripple doh!
Through general wear & tear the more essential maintenance eg New exhaust, tyres, front wishbones, rear suspension arms once each, tracking, clutch cylnder, new radiator, pads and discs all round twice since owned, then more recently Airflow meter, ECU reset, power steering pressure pipes replaced and the alloys refurbed.
In response to the other new guy (Darren I think..hey fella) take it from me do not cut any corners regarding the engine... service it well and it should last a very long time. However I do now have a very reliable local garage that can carry out all the basic stuff (brake discs and pads, suspension bush replacement) using Alfa to take care of major servicing and electrical/ diagnostic stuff. The car is pretty much up together again and I'm happy to keep it for a few more years yet... I could buy a more sensible less expensive to maintain car but where's the fun in that! I'll post a pic of Alfie soon when I figure out how!
I'll try to keep it shorter next time!
