I found myself in the position of urgently needing a car for a couple of months. Only looking to spend a few hundred quid, and will probably end up scrapping the thing after I've done with it.
I saw advertised a 156 Selespeed that looked very straight and clean, and very, very cheap because it had a couple of gearbox issues although it drove well still. As I have always done when buying a car, I had a look for an owners forum, and found this one. I am so glad I did as I read a few pages of the "selespeed info" thread and decided it was a bad idea.
But by now I was hooked on the 156! Owners seem so passionate about their cars. In much the same way as I am passionate about my Moto Guzzi motorbike. Similarly, non Alfa drivers seem to rubbish their reliability jusat as non Guzzi riders assume my Guzzi is unreliable., which it most definitly is not. Nor were any of the Aprilias I owned. before the Guzzi.
Anyway, since then I have read ALL of the selespeed thread and cannot find any post that describes the same issues. So I have decided I will go and look at this selespeed and have a drive of it to see what the gear box issues are, then post them on here to see if thewre is anything in the thread. As (it says in the ad) it changes gears OK, the thread indicates it could be a corroded connector or relay.
I'm having to resist buying it until I have a cause for the issues and a (hopeful cheap) repair. Whatever, I WILL soon have a 156, and as a classic insurance policy is cheap for a second car which it will be.
