Faulty Lambda???

Hello to you all. I have just joined the forum and already I think it could save me alot of time and cash - yipee. I have recently purchased a 1.6TS 147 (late 2002) and have developed two faults. The first very simple (and apparently common) windscreen wiper breakage, but the second is of more concern . The car seems to lose almost all power across the whole rev range. When the car starts from cold then most power is there, but very quickly drops off. It feels as if there is not enough fuel being delivered and there are numerous flat spots were all power goes. However fuel is going through (too much if anything) . Lots of threads suggest the MAF, but I am thinking more likely a Lambda. Is there a way to check it? Would disconecting it solve the problem if it is?
Any help would be appreciated.
