Spider project

Hi folks...recently I bought 2 Spiders, one is an organ doner and the other a driver. The "organ doner" is a 1976 american model, the other I haven't a clue. The 1976 has a battery in the trunk, the other has one in the engine compartment. Can anyone help men identify or decode the alfa with the battery in the trunk. I tried to decode it on line but there aren't enough characters in the vin code, I've not yet received the paperwork on it yet. Patrick

Re: Spider project

Hi Patrick,

Sorry, but given the information you've provided nobody is going to be able to help you. Actually I'm not sure what you're really asking.

As far as I know (and I'm willing to stand corrected if wrong) the battery in the trunk detail is likely an owner-made modification and not a factory installed feature. So that won't help you decode or identify anything. You do (presumably) know that one spider is a 1976 version, so that should be your starting point as to figuring out what the car is. I'm not sure what number you're using or what online decoder.

As for the other car, I hope it is one of a similar age. Even though there are parts that can be shared across the years, if you are looking to do straight swaps, you're better off to have the donor and the driver as similar as possible.

Re: Spider project

Welcome to AO

Here is some help for you

http://spiderfaq.home.att.net/dev_his.htm

It should give you some clues as to the cars you own

I'm pretty sure that the battery was fitted into the boot (Trunk) of all Series 4 cars and may also have been moved there in some Series 3..... where the the space under the bonnet (hood) was restricted.... but don't worry....... someone will be along to help you

Alfa spider

Re: Spider project

Hi Everyone And thank you for such a rapid reply. The 1976 Alfa spider is a car that I'd previously owed. I bought it back in wrecked condition but a complete car. The other Spider is nearly identical, only not wrecked. The only difference between the two cars is the battery location. The spider with the battery in the trunk is original, I can tell by the molded form and welds that it is installed by the manufacturer. The other Spider has a battery in the engine compartment and also looks absolutely orginal. I will probably keep the battery uder the hood and just alter the cable lengths. This has no bearing on how the project is going I was only curious when and why Alfa made this change. I'm trying to determine the year and any information I can find out about the second car. (the one with the battery in the engine compartment) Thank you again ....Patrick
