Re: agonizing debate over 156 purchase
First; please do not rush into your purchase. AO has loads of brilliant 156 experts here with knowledge of the 156. They will help guide you and thus make you feel more confident when understanding and buying a 156. You do not have to buy the first 156 you see; ask us all your questions, then go and buy armed with this knowledge.
With respect to your specific questions:
1- It's not a girl's car. It's a car for a single guy on the prowl (so says my mom). >> Your Alfa will not know or care for your gender or intentions. It is a car. That said, it is a driving experience that you will relish. Care only for what you think, not other people's misguided thoughts (even if they are your Mum's!)
2- You'll never be able to get it serviced/find parts here (I'm in the Dominican Republic) >> I can't comment on that, but I wouldn't be surprised if that was true given that even in the relatively mature UK market, Alfa remains hopeless. So bear that in mind.
3- Anything made by Fiat shold be banned! (general concensus) >> Based on what? Sounds like folklore to me, not fact.
4- I should get a Corolla (gross) If you want 100% absolute reliability and peace of mind, then yes, you should. But you'll be bored to death with it for the rest of your life (which the Corolla will outlive)
5- $12000 USD is way too expensive for it. Incidentally a 2002 toyota corolla goes for between 20,000 and 25,000 dollars here due to very hefty import taxes (all cars are heavily taxed upon import) >> No comment
6- Alfas fall apart >> and, Toyota, Lexus and Honda aside, what cars do not fall apart? They ALL do, including Alfas.
7- You drive too fast already! >> 100kph is 100kph, whether you're in a Toyota or an Alfa Romeo. It's down to you - and you alone - to drive safely. You control the throttle, not the car.
My summary? As long as you have a pulse, you should use AO's help to buy a lovely 156 over a Corolla.
Even in the darkest hour, love comes shining through.
Then it doesn't seem so far from me to you.
