Have been lurking on this site for a couple of weeks now and have benefited from the information you have been swapping. My wife and I have been looking at Alfa Romeo cars with a view to purchasing second hand 147 (couple of years old) for my wife’s use – It has been an interesting experience as so far she has always chosen cars which are a sensible and logical choice!! I test drove a JTD diesel 147 16 valve which performed well but had been ‘well used’ – it was the company car of an employee of our local Alfa Romeo dealer. I was amused that they were willing to have a car for sale on their forecourt which would not start without the aid of a battery booster had broken lights and had to be left running to warm up while we filled in the paperwork. The car seemed to run quite roughly until fully warmed up when I was quite impressed with the performance. The engine check light remaining on did not inspire confidence however. We moved on and after a similar experience at a local car supermarket finally ended up at Sidlows near Gatwick where the service and presentation of their cars was so much better. During the test drive, as a passenger my wife was not too keen on the car (colour not ideal and a few details) while I felt that the poor gear change would put her off. She completely changed her mind when driving it (this seems a common trait among Alfa owners). We ended up with a 147 Lusso 1.6TI with leather interior. The car had the gear change linkages and its cam belt replaced before collection (issues dealt with on this site). So far we are very pleased with the experience.
