Hello all. Just introducing myself as a new member and the owner of a 2003 (facelift) 156, 1.8.
It's been a lovely car for its first three years. One month out of warranty, though, and the gremlins have begun... I replaced a flat battery with a new one three weeks ago. Yesterday, the new one was was also completely dead.
I notice members on several threads on this excellent site who've had similar problems. For anyone whose interested in my little problem (!), I took my car in to my local dealer (Central Alfa in Dudley, West Midlands, who are very good in my experience) and they've diagnosed a faulty heater resister (65 quid). In fact, I'd noticed the heater/fan playing up a bit recently, so if this occurs in your car, note that you can, apparently, unplug the heater underneath the glove box when the car's parked. Otherwise, be prepared for the death of your battery... possibly twice!
