Well Happy Alfa 145 1700cc Twin Spark T Reg.

You guys are my last hope. I was advised to try this Alfa forum, and I can see from reading thru it that you Alfa boys are technical wizards.
The story so far..........I'm a mature lady, but love, always have, driving Alfas. Bought my first one way back in the late eighties, bought them second hand, brand new, the lot. Can I add at this point that I've never considered educating myself on what goes on under the bonnet?
Now, this one I bought privately, [a bit of royalty connection, judging by the previous owner]. Anyway, as usual, I digress.
Last year, coming off the motorway, after some serious driving, the engine started to rumble. Drove it extremely slowly quarter of a mile to my mechanic. Well, he revved the car up, locked the door, told me to throw away the key, and turned away to answer his mobile. I obviously waited for an explanation, notwithstanding the fact that I had no other transport on me at that moment.
He'd done a major service on the car 7 days before, and at the time, he asked me if the 'cam belts', had been changed. I said I'd bring in all paperwork to him. 2 days later I went back clutching my A4 folder containing all paperwork, but, alas, he was closed. 5 days later.........clunk,clunk.
And there we have it, 1 Alfa sitting there with it's owner in a quandry.
Now, the mechanic took a detailed look at it, and said it needed a new engine. He was supposed to be sourcing this, and I said I'd look too.
He never ever called me, but in the meantime I'm periodically looking thru magazines autotrader ebay etc.
So, okay, the car's been sitting in his yard.
Well, I thought, although there's literally not a mark inside or out, all keys ,every single thing works, no rust any where on metallic paint, in fact looks like a new car, just doesn't go,....I'll scrap it.
Mechanic now says that I should just give him the car, and maybe he'll be able to 'get an engine for it'.
Wasn't that supposed to be the initial plan?
Am I going senile? [Don't answer that].
You guys any ideas? So sad, it's a great car to drive, as you know.
Yours in anticipation. L.

Hi mate, welcome onboard

Can I suggest you post your query here instead? You should get more members likely to be able to help to see it.

Hi, Sorry to hear of your problems.
It sounds most like your big ends have gone. This is repairable and costs around 200 for the crank regrind and oversize bearing shells.
The problem is that you need to get the engine out and apart, and also rebuilt after the regrind.
Using a garage at 50 an hour will cost more than the 1000 or so that the car's worth- perhaps why your mechanic suggested replacing the engine but twin spark engines are quite sought after and I don't know if you will get one for less than 600 and the work to replace the engine will surely be 400 or more.
The car is a gold mine for parts and if you break it you should see some of your money back- or you could sell it and somebody else will do this for you.
Giving it to the mechanic seems a little too generous IMHO.

Hello and welcome to AO.

It all sounds a bit peculiar to me!
Do you think the mechanic is hiding something he cocked up at the service?

Also, is it a 1.7 Boxer or a 1.8 T.Spark? If it's on a T-Reg I think it will be a 1.8 T. Spark.

Whereabouts are you? Can you get the car recovered to an Alfa specialist? As mentioned above it's too much just to give the car away! You could either do with someone looking at the car who knows Alfa engines, or else put the car on Ebay as a none-runner, but with a good and accurate description as to how clean the car is.

Good luck!

Sooo sorry, this is an unpleasant story. I'd suggest you look for a solution under the current Pit Bull Terrier thread. Sound like there's a use for them after all. apart form amusing us.
Very big welcome.
Did the mechanics attentions extend to putting oil in it???

Or perhaps he answered the phone instead of tightening the oil filter with other than a greasy hand. Actually even that should hve been enuff!
