You guys are my last hope. I was advised to try this Alfa forum, and I can see from reading thru it that you Alfa boys are technical wizards.
The story so far..........I'm a mature lady, but love, always have, driving Alfas. Bought my first one way back in the late eighties, bought them second hand, brand new, the lot. Can I add at this point that I've never considered educating myself on what goes on under the bonnet?
Now, this one I bought privately, [a bit of royalty connection, judging by the previous owner]. Anyway, as usual, I digress.
Last year, coming off the motorway, after some serious driving, the engine started to rumble. Drove it extremely slowly quarter of a mile to my mechanic. Well, he revved the car up, locked the door, told me to throw away the key, and turned away to answer his mobile. I obviously waited for an explanation, notwithstanding the fact that I had no other transport on me at that moment.
He'd done a major service on the car 7 days before, and at the time, he asked me if the 'cam belts', had been changed. I said I'd bring in all paperwork to him. 2 days later I went back clutching my A4 folder containing all paperwork, but, alas, he was closed. 5 days later.........clunk,clunk.
And there we have it, 1 Alfa sitting there with it's owner in a quandry.
Now, the mechanic took a detailed look at it, and said it needed a new engine. He was supposed to be sourcing this, and I said I'd look too.
He never ever called me, but in the meantime I'm periodically looking thru magazines autotrader ebay etc.
So, okay, the car's been sitting in his yard.
Well, I thought, although there's literally not a mark inside or out, all keys ,every single thing works, no rust any where on metallic paint, in fact looks like a new car, just doesn't go,....I'll scrap it.
Mechanic now says that I should just give him the car, and maybe he'll be able to 'get an engine for it'.
Wasn't that supposed to be the initial plan?
Am I going senile? [Don't answer that].
You guys any ideas? So sad, it's a great car to drive, as you know.
Yours in anticipation. L.
