Robert - race prepering a GTV

I am currenetly the owner of a GTV 3.0, my main interest in this site is to seek advice and opinions on modifying my car so that it can be used for both track and road use, there is a compromise but, it is only a toy and not our main family car, thats an LR2 Freelander.

My purchases so far have been fairly limited to a KONI Suspension Kit incorporating adjustable dampers and 20mm lower springs, Uprated grooved and drilled front discs from EB Spares with softer pads front and rear and a Corbeau fixed back racing seat, I am also considering installing a K&N Induction Kit, and remapping the ECU, other items recently fitted are a new thermostat, and rear wheel bearings.

What I need is somebody with racing experience to give me there opinion on setting up the damper stiffness as I am unable to undertake handling testing on a track just now. I do have the technical data for setting up the toe in and camber offsets though.

Any advice would be apreciated.

There will certainly be someone here who can help you - loads of the guys with GTVs use them on the track But you're best bet would be to post a question on the GTV section as it's more likely to be picked up by someone who knows about it.

Hi Robert,

for track day use, or competitve racing?

I have no competitve experience but from tinkering around with my own car on lots of track days, and easily advice obtained "handling matrixes" on the web for adjustments for oversteer understeer I would suggest the following.

Moderately soft/medium front damper settings, obviously strong enough to have some effect in relation to the spring rate you have.
You defintely want the car to feel controlled but If you have the front dampers too strong you lose traction out of corners since the suspension reacts slower and can't hunt for traction as efficiently.

Very stiff damper settings at the rear, this really improves turn in on track, and does make the rear a little more twitchy which helps kill some understeer.
If you have a very bumpy course perhaps not too stiff since your rear may twitch under heavy braking but this will become pretty obvious.

Some advice from a seriously experienced racer for my own car was to get adjustable anti roll bars that would allow you to stiffen up the rear to give more balanced cornering , and this would also allow softer damper and spring settings at the rear.
This would allow each component do do their specific jobs more efficiently.
It would also make the car more comfortable on the road since the rear springs would be softer.

If its just track days, Ferrode DS2500 pads are superb, very strong and long lasting with excellent heat resistance - but also perfectly usable for the road (although they are classed as a light competition pad).
Since you mentioned softer pads maybe you are doing competitive racing and have a pad that will last one race? The GTV will be pretty heavy on pads I would think.

Don't lower the rear too much relative to the front, the lower the rear the more understeer you will induce.

An LSD will make a couple of seconds difference to your lap time allowing you to plant the throttle way earlier out of corners.


I'm not a doctor - but I really do recommend braking later
