Hi and welcome.
In my limited experience I would stay away from sillyspeeds but then I am a fan of stirring the stick.

Re: New to the Alfa!!

Hi,

Mine's an 03 and has been pretty sound for 36000 miles. Just had 36000 service done, with plugs and belts changed as a matter of course.

I am having a few troubles with Selespeed and not sure I would like to have had one for 3 years with no warranty as I had to have the Selespeed actuator (the bit that changes gear) changed under warranty.

But I do love the Selespeed system as it saves a lot of clutch ball ache when stuck in traffic as I often am.

Anyway, it has to be better than a Rav 4!

Welcome to AO btw. Not been around much myself recently, but has always been the bext place to get impartical advice.

Cheers,

Chappy.

Re: New to the Alfa!!

Hello jmedia,

I've had my 147 selespeed for about 9 months, and absolutely love it. Whenever I'm abroad and have to drive a normal manual or an automatic I realise how great the Selespeed system really is.

So far (touch wood), I've had no problems at all with it, but if you search this site you will find plenty of other people who had.

Take the car for a long test drive and check the following:
  • Smooth gear change in city mode when driven normally
  • Smooth gear change in city mode when driven hard
  • Smooth 'manual' gear change in city mode when driven normally
  • Smooth 'manual' gear change in city mode when driven hard
  • In second gear accelerate to about 6500 rpm, the rev limiter should then shift to 3rd for - this change should also be nice and smooth
  • Try 'crawling' very slowly in 1st gear and check that the car doesn't 'jump'
  • Test that both flappy paddles and gear lever works
  • Reverse around a bit - try a few manouvres. Reverse parking up a hill can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of it
  • Obviously a full service history is mandatory

Hope you will enjoy your Selespeed!
