Help Burnt clutch on Alfa Giulietta

I bought my car in 2012. A few weeks ago, when driving in heavy rain with stop start traffic, I noticed white smoke coming from the bonnet and a strong 'burnt' smell. Have reported it to a dealer and have just taken car in to be checked - have been advised that if it is indeed a burnt (blue) clutch Fiat SA won't pay for it as it's attributed to 'driver style'.

I am baffled - drove the same car for 11 years and never had a problem with the clutch. During a google search I read of other Alfa Giulietta drivers having similar experiences - hence my decision to join the forum. Something doesn't add up - either Alfa attracts a disproportionate amount of drivers with problematic driving styles or there is a problem that isn't being acknowledged! All feedback appreciated.
