Newbie looking for a 159

My daily driver (Ford Focus) got rear-ended today and I'm 99% sure it's going to be written off! So I'm pre-emptively thinking about a replacement and have always wanted an Alfa.

I am a petrolhead (my other car is a Porsche 944S2 which is a restoration labour of love). I need some reliable(ish) daily transport and I think it's time to consider something a bit more fun than a Focus... I have one German rear wheel drive car so an Italian front wheel drive car seems to make sense rather than a boring 3-series BMW or Audi A4.

It will be used for long trips and transporting a large dog so I'm thinking about a diesel and an estate. Budget is around 6-8k

So some quick questions (thanks in advance):

* Any reason to prefer the 1.9 or 2.4 diesel
* I like to buy cars privately but there are hardly any private sales on autotrader?
* Anything in particular to watch out for?
* Any good buyers guides (found the alfa workshop one)

Hi :hi:

Welcome to AO

Has to be Ti spec, I would go for the 2.0 over the 1.9, the 2.4 is more powerful so go for that if thats your mustard
