Hello from hopeful 166 owner

Hi All,

I'm just starting out on a search for my first Alfa

I'm into sporty motors - usually of the older variety (it's all I can afford with my family to support!) - requiring me to get handy with the spanners on a regular basis! I'm currently running a 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo... but this has required some major work (head is off at the moment ) & the wife is fed up with me spending every weekend under it.

So I'm looking to get a newer sporty car [on a budget] with space to get the kids in the back. With my daily motorway commuting the 166 has appealed for some time - bit of 'class' with motorway cruise comfort AND a sporty feel at the same time.

Before my 924 I had a 928 (5L V8 with comfy leather interior), but that nearly bankrupted me! I also had a 3L V6 Vaux Omega... which was a complete dog to drive - super soggy suspension & steering. My only Italian car was a Lancia Delta HF Turbo... great fun but very fragile.

Anyway - I'll be pestering you for advice on 166 buying - hope there's some strong opinions out there...

Hi and welcome. I'm the wrong one to ask, I love alfa's period, can't choose between them. Goodluck in your quest. Cheers

Hi scotchw...you could also think about a Fiat coupe 20VT...a good one with belt change will cost 2500 and you can get smallish kids in the back.........

Re: Hello from hopeful 166 owner

Thanks for the welcome guys...

harleyriv - you're right, I have considered the Fiat Coupe... but my gut feel was that it would be just as fragile as my old Lancia Delta HF. Now I'm hopin' that the big Alfa is gonna be a little more solid (hey - it's still Italian, so will still have some 'quirks' )... but that's what I'm here to find out

Beautiful car and I hope to be getting one of my own. By all accounts the 3.0 and 3.2 are the ones to go for. Check out the Jeremy Clarkson Top Gear review on youtube.com. Hope this helps.
