Hmmm Hello - Any advice on cambelt failure?

We have owned an 156 sportwagon from new since 2002. It has been great until recently. We have spent 400 on a new radiator and this weekend it broke down at night with two small children in tow in the middle of nowhere. After being towed (late at night around hairpin bends) to our local dealer we found out that the cambelt had snapped and it would involve 2000 of work! I nearly fell over! Has anybody else suffered this? The car has done 63000 miles and the belt is not normally changed until the 72000 mile service. Surely the belt should last until this time? Has anybody managed to get a contribution from Alfa Romeo towards the cost? I have logged my claim and await a response.

Welcome to AO

Doubt you will get anywhere with the claim as the belts should if I remember rightly have been changed after 3 years

Hope you get it sorted

Welcome to AO
Sorry to hear about your mis-fortune.
Have you tried going to your local breakers yard or even considered a recon engine?
Good luck

Welcome mate and sorry to hear the story.

Do have a search through the threads to see several discussions on cambelt and cambelt-related repairs.

People have had mixed results with claims from Alfs. What is your service history like? I see you're out of the three year warranty, but you may get some contribution if your SH is ok.

Hello mate and welcome !!

Sorry to hear of your problems!!

I am, however, going to report to the NSPCC for 'towing' your children... I'm pretty sure that's illegal !!

We have a full service history so hopefully this should sway any compensation in our favour. Our dealer has also offered to get in touch with Alfa too. Good Alfa service depts do exist occasionally!
