4th gear selection "issues"

about 4 months ago 4th gear stopped working, it felt as if something was blocking it. I phoned local AR dealership and was told to bring it in and that there was a strong possiblity that i would need to have the gearbox replaced and was qouted 1500 at which point i became very nervous! after looking on this site i saw some posts that mentioned linkage problems that cause similar problems. After taking the car to a local garage they checked it out and told me there wasn't any oil in the gearbox! so they put some in and hey presto in 1 day 4th was back!...until this morning! same problem has come back, does anyone have any good news/suggestions?

Re: 4th gear selection "issues"

Hi Corky and welcome!

I experienced problems with my 147 gearbox too (4 times out of 5 I could not change from 2nd to 3rd gear), But apparently it was linked to a bush issue.

The car was repaired under Warranty (after an epic fight with both Garage and Alfa-Romeo UK) and since it has seemed to work.

On your side is your car still under Warranty? It would make things simpler, to avoid financing high cost repairs!

If the gearbox was run with no oil in I would think it would need replacing

Try having fully synthetic gearbox oil put in, it might help. It certainly helped my clunky gearbox.

Re: 4th gear selection "issues"

... in complement to my previous message,

check out this link about stiff gear box.

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-...gear-knob.html

This was exactly my problem and could be yours also (despite it does not explain the lack of gearbox oil).

In that case, it would cost ca. 1 for the bush and ca. 100 for the labour.

Still better that a standard gearbox replacement!!

Hope it helps,

All the Best!

Re: 4th gear selection "issues"

sadly no longer under warranty! (on an 02 plate)
so at some point this is going to hurt i think!
think i might try a gearbox specialist rather than dealership though as the garage that refilled the gearbox oil for me said that the dealership were taking the p*** as its just a standard fiat gearbox and therefore should not cost anywhere near what i was quoted..was the guy right about this or not? (the gearbox i mean!)

thanks for your comments so far
