engine oil

How often do I have to change an engine oil, on a selespeed 147 2.0 litre, cause since I'd bought this 2002 model, every month I have to buy two tins of engine oil. and today I got a vdc & abs WARNING signals,is these b'cause my boyfriend is using his left foot on a brake or its tellin' me that, there's something wrong with the brake switch?

Re: engine oil

Um, if it's using two tins of oil every month (is that what you're saying?) then that's anything but normal and you need to get it to a garage.

As for the warning signals, if you mean the warning triangle on the dash, then it's normal for that to light up now and then, though not every time you brake, unless you're braking very violently all the time.

If you're getting a worded message on the computer display, again, take it to a garage.

Good luck

Re: engine oil

The maximum 'normal' consumption is 1.5 litres per 500 miles (according to Alfa) but that is a huge amount on its own.

The oil consumption varies on twin sparks from zero to the maximum above, my 156 did in 1.5 litres in 12,000 miles, the 147 uses roughly a litre avery 3000 miles.

I don't think that's correct, my handbook says 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles

Re: engine oil

Thanks guyz for your input,it all make sense to me now,
As for the type of oil I'm using, I use any oil from different garages, tell me do we have a specific engine oil for alfa romeo.

and the triangle of VDC & ABS WARNING light has vanished on the computer board, but I still need to take it to the garage.

I THANK YOU ALL

Re: engine oil

PER day I cover 20kM, from my place to work, which is about 12.428.
Then translate that to a month period, its about 385 miles per month
(620 KM).
Then you said 1.5 litres covers 500 miles , that means at 128 miles
(206 KM) I have to pour 500 ML engine oil.

What I did before, I had to get a confirmation from the garage attandant, if he says, the oil is still at required level, then it was fine with me.But now I know almost.

Any good quality 10w-40 semi-synthetic oil should do. Alfa recommend Selena, but that's difficult to get hold of. I personally use Castrol Magnatex, others recommend Mobil 1. Mobil 1 is I believe a fully synthectic oil, which I think is rated ar 0w-40. I'd be a bit apprehensive about using it as its thinner than recommended, and therefore you oil consumption might increase.
