New 156 Owner - Happy ...then stressed!!

I have recently purchased a 156 1.8TS.

I was very impressed with my intial aquaintance with the engineering and performance. Both the bodywork and engine seemed in perfect condition.

However, I was informed by the previous owner that the car had missed a Cam Belt change ... and that I ought to change it ASAP.

I arranged the Cam Belt, Tensioner and Cam Variator and General Service. However the garage could not do immediately - and I had to wait for 10 days for the work to be done.

In between times - something has given way and now the is a terrible clatter coming from the area of the Head. I have called the garage - and have been advised that if I am lucky it might only be a tensioner that has broken.

Am I unfortunate ....or is this typical of the experiences of a 156 owner??

Sounds like a tensioner - DO NOT DRIVE THIS CAR!

get it into the garage via a recovery service. Whilst you are there, also change the water pump.

yes the engine is still running, albeit noisily, I have not turned it over since i arrived home after the incident yesterday. I am making arrangements to have it towed to a garage.

Thanks for the water pump hint ... I would not have thought of that.

So you don't think the valves could have collided with the pistons then??

Not if the belt has not jumped teeth. The tolerances are tight enough that even 1 or 2 jumped teeth would have resulted in crunch - endgame in all likeliness.

Don't stress yourself with what you dont know - wait and see.

Thanks for the useful info --- on the number of teeth that the cambelt can skip .....before the big crunch!

I might sleep tonight ....
