156 Windscreen Wiper problem - 156 intermittent starting problem.

Good morning people,

I am a 1st time Alfa Romeo owner just bought a 156 TS. Only a had the car a week and appears i have a couple of issues not sure how small or big these are just wanted to run them past you peeps, to see if you could maybe help.

1, Started my car up this morning drove to a friends to give him lift to work parked up on his driveway which is on a slight hill got back in tried to start the car and sounded like it was about to turn over but made a whining noise and failed to start, i tried again waited for all lights on dash to go off and did the same this time gave it some gas and same thing happened, this happened about 6 times and then eventually the car started up! Anyway got to work parked up and turned off the car and then turned it on and off several times and had no problem. Does anyone know what this could be?

2, The windscreen wipers don't work properly - started raining this morning on the way to work , turned the wipers on and they wiped the screen once and then stopped in the middle of the screen. I pulled over after trying to change the various speeds and to engage them again and nothing. After pulling over i gave them a hand by pushing them back down and they appeared to started to wipe the screen again. Worked for a minute or so and then same problem getting stuck. Is this a common problem and what is the 1st point to check?

Would be grateful for any feedback thanks.

You may want to post your specific questions on the 156 part of the forum to get a much quicker answer. Here's a link: 156 part of AO

Hi bud and welcome...

Windscreen wipers are a common problem on the 156, basically the wiper switch unit in the steering column has grease in it and this blocks the contacts in the mechanism.

You could always replace it, but what always used to work for me was to take hold of the wiper stalk and rapidly move it up and down through the complete extent of it's movement. Do this quickly for a good thirty seconds to a minute and this will clear the grease from the mechanism...

Doesn't cost anything - give it a go....
