Alfa 159 2.4JTD Fuel Consumption

Looking for some guidance here guys...
Considering a 159 2.4JTD but on the model I test drove the average fuel consumption showed 31mpg on 2000 miles!
Albeit everyone punishes cars during test drives, but this is a mile away from the claimed average of 41.5mpg. I am a high mileage driver and couldn't live with this difference.
Can anyone cast some light on their own experience for this model - what average mpg are you all achieving?
Cheers

Re: Alfa 159 2.4JTD Fuel Consumption

Hi Pal,

[edited for advertising] I do 1000 miles a week in 2.4JTD's ( 159 & a Brera ) which I know is cool BUT I have to pay for my fuel which is a minimum of £500 per month. Both cars are running at approx 31MPG

I love the Alfa's and they are better in my book than the germans but they aint doing the MPG bit

Re: Alfa 159 2.4JTD Fuel Consumption

No diesel will do anywhere near it's MPG in a test drive scenario, especially mixed in with lots of town driving. You really need to sit and cruise at a constant speed for a long time - my old BMW would run quite happily @ motorway cruising speeds at 40+ (for an old 530d auto this is good). But put it around town for too long and the number would rapidly drop to around 30..

basically change of throttle and speed is very bad for economy, constant revs are good. If you want to see what your ultimate economy is drive a few hundred miles on a quiet motorway rat say 70mph resetting the counter before you start...

Simon.
