Hmmm selespeed problems

Hello everyone,
I live in Canberra ACT, Australia and 12 months ago purchased a 2003 156 selespeed. I am having problems with the gearbox jumping out of gear and into neutral. This can happen from either 4th or 5th gear and at any speed from 20km/h to 80km/h. The car has been back to the local dealers 4 times and to date neither they or the Alfa importers into Australia cannot fix the problem. Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you fix the problem. BTW the car has the latest Alfa downloads, it is regularly recalibrated (clutch), the actuator has been changed and the last fix was to change the selespeed oil.
Regards.

Re: selespeed problems

Hmm trickey blighters these sillyspeeds . If you search the forums there is heaps of info on problems similar to yours. Sounds like you have tried most things! Sounds like programming but as you say you have tried that. One thing to try or get the garage to do is clean and spray the all the electrical contacts, particularly the earths. I have read about this a few times, it's supposed to help a lot. As I say, search the forums there is loads on selespeeds! Hope it gets fixed.

Re: selespeed problems

Cal,
Thank you for your reply. I have read a great number of discussions on this and other web sites regarding selespeeds. The strange thing is that no two cars are showing the same problems and the suggested remedies are as varied as the problems. Very weird.
The local dealer here says they have checked all of the connections, relays and other wires for bad connections and possible "rub" marks causing a possible short. They also replaced the battery at the same time as they replaced the actuator. I guess the next thing to replace is the selespeed pump. I'm glad I opted for extended warranty through to Sept 08 when hopefully they will have replaced the possible faults several times by then and also someone just may find the real cause of all of our problems. The only down side will be forums such as this will have no real purpose then and will only be a picture gallery of our cars.
Thanks again and also regards to all members.

Re: selespeed problems

At least your garage sounds keen to help, and you have warranty. Mine failed (dumped all ss oil on floor one morning) I ended up paying for new pump and actuator. I was on the verge of writing the car off as there was not much difference in the repair bill and the value of the car. I do love the SS, when you are hammering it and you get it to do the faster change it is so sweet but it has its probs.
The best of luck anyway.

Hmmm Re: selespeed problems

Just an update for everyone in general.
Since my last reply to Cal the dealers have replaced the Selespeed oil and yes you guessed right, it didn't work.
They have now replaced the battery yet again, and yes you have guessed right again, it didn't work.
The latest drama is that we are loosing our local dealer and waiting for a new one to be anounced. Meanwhile Alfa Australia are organising one of their Sydney technicans to drive down to Canberra (8 hrs round trip) to have a look at my car and see for themselves. As far as I can work out the only components left to change are the Selespeed pump and the alternator, everything else has been changed.
I jokingly said that they may need to jack the radiator cap up and run a new car under. That remark didn't tickle their funny bone.
I will keep everyone posted with updates.

Re: selespeed problems

I take it that means all is sorted out now.

Glad to hear that, if it's the case!

Hmmm Re: selespeed problems

Yes, I hope it has been fixed too, but I will let everyone know when we have done some more kms. Incase I confused anyone, the new ECU was put in when the car had done only 34,228km. My fingers, toes and everything else is crossed that Alfa Australia have eventually found the problem.
Regards
