156 Transponder faults

Hi, have a 2000 MY 156 2.0 TS, had the car for 14 months with an occasional transponder fault. Key symbol on dash does not go out ( no start ). I you mess about with the key in & out the ign' barrel ( with the drivers door open seems better?! ) eventualy it sorts itself out & you can go. Now my other half had the car on friday, an hours drive from home, no matter what she did nothing would make the immobiliser come off.

She phoned the AA , nice man came out & said ' oh yes this is on our system Alfas have weak transponders' . Quarter of an hour with the battery off & all cured, my tea was an hour late!.

Tried the car after tea still ok. Saturday morning , nothing doing immobiliser stuck on again! Has anyone else had similar? Is there a cure? A friend of mine said open one of the keys , take out the transponder chip & tape it onto the bottom of the ign' barrel under the column cowling, is this a cheap fix I wonder? Any ideas HELP, I need to go to work on Monday.

Re: 156 Transponder faults

Yes, it's not the transponder, it's the plug that connects the transponder coil to the immo unit. Unplug it a few times, and you will be sorted for at least a year. So far I have. If you can't find it, I'll get my lardy arse outside and take a photo of the immo unit.

Welcome to the forum by the way

Re: 156 Transponder faults

Hi Hoygaard, just going out to look for the coil plug. Thanks for the advise. If I can't find it I will ask for photo's. If not I'll just unplug everything!

Thumbs Up Re: 156 Transponder faults

Thanks Hoygaard. Just been outside, traced the wire from the ring around the ign' barrel back to the control unit ( how the hell were you going to take a photo of that? ) pulled the plug a couple of times ( battery was still connected ) away she went. Have put some coloured tape on the cable near the plug just incase it needs doing in the middle of the night sometime! Thanks a million.
