alfa 156 gearbox swop

hi everybody well i have just bought a 156 2.4 jtd 2000 model with a knackered gearbox .5 speed manual box. i have a 156 2 litre petrol 2 litre twin spark which i am breaking with a good 5 speed gearbox its a 1998 model. i was wondering if the petrol gearbox would fit into my 2.4 diesel and save me buying a gearbox. although the gear ratios may differ slightly would the gearbox fit. or are they totally different gearboxes any help would be great

Re: alfa 156 gearbox swop

Hi, welcome to AO

I am guessing but I really think it will not fit,

The characteristics of the diesal are so different to petrol, I cant see the ratios even being close, nor do I think it will fit to a 5 cylinder block

Re: alfa 156 gearbox swop

The Biggest difference between the 2.4 JTD and the twin spark, is the torque capability.
Alfa give the gearboxes a code. The 2.5 V6, 1.9 JTD and the 2.4 JTD, use a C530 box, whereas the twin sparks use the C510. (What an anorak I am eh?)

The casings are also different, mainly on the bell housing if I remember correctly. You may find a V6 one will do it but I'm not sure if it will bolt straight on or if you'll have to change the bell housing. Plus the ratios will be different too!
Safest bet is go onto Find-a-parts or similar and see if you can find the right one.

Hope that helps!!
