Engine coolant

I have a 147 and after topping up my oil I have noticed my engine coolant is almost empty! Can I use any make e.g halfords, or do I need to use what they say in the hand book? Am I doing any harm by just putting in some water until I can get to the garage, surely something in there is better than nothing!

Re: Engine coolant

If by empty you mean the header tank is empty, then topping up with water is fine, even running with water only if fine but only in the very short term, coolant additive is a corrosion inhibiter as well as an antifreeze, I wouldnt advocate mixing additves either,
you will need your coolant tested for the ratio of additive/water.

drain it all and refill with the correct amount is the best solution to all of this,

however...

..where has your coolant gone, you need to sort this out first before wasting money on refilling the system.

Re: Engine coolant

My cam belt went about 2 months ago, could this have anything to do with my coolant being empty now? It has less than an inch in it, is it best to put some water in tonight and pop to the garage in the morning, I'm afraid I know nothing about engines, therefore can easily be ripped off by garages for being a woman who knows nothing!

Re: Engine coolant

It is possible that if you havent checked the coolant level after the garage repairedthe engine that the coolant level has 'settled' and just topping up with a couple of pints of water will be sufficient.

I suggest top up tonight with water and check after every use for the next few days. If the level doesnt change, then when its convenient, have the coolant raito to water checked by a garage, preferably in the next few weeks/month.

If the level drops again you will need to get it looked at.

I assume the engine temperature is ok, and, there arent any leaks youve noticed?

Re: Engine coolant

No leaks as far as I'm aware of, thanks for your help. It is now topped up with water and I will check it again tomorrow evening.

Re: Engine coolant

The level seems to have stayed the same after I put water in, probably the garage leaving it low so they can make more money out of me!

Re: Engine coolant

It may not have been bled properly, if at all, when the airlock worked itself out the level dropped, lets hope thats all it is.
