My Honda Jazz is so relentlessly reliably boring that I finally followed my heart and bought myself my dream car: the Alfetta GTV 2.0, 1979 model. Red, of course.
I bought it as is for R 11 000. It's been standing outside, more or less just "standing", for three years in the Cape Town wind and sun. Obviously with a fair amount of rust added.
Then the fun started. I bought it on a Thursday, drove it home, oil change and basic stuff like lights fixed up and new wiper blades fitted the Friday, and that Saturday my son and I made a road trip of nearly 500 km to Beaufort West. Well, OK, we had a late start because the left front brake caliper got stuck after years of non-use.
The trip went remarkably well. The engine's a beaut. The biggest frustration was the seat belt that frequently got stuck before it was quite over my belly.
30 km's out of Beaufort the battery light came on, but we made it all the way there!
It is now under restoration, in the good hands of Fires van Vuuren in Beaufort West, who did an excellent restoration job on my 1962 left hand drive VW Beetle a few years ago.
I can't wait to get my Alfa back!
