Alfa 147 - Southwest
Hi, I bought my 147 about a year ago and very happy with it. I also found this site to be the most useful when searching for help to deal with any issues about my interesting Italian! So, have now decided it was time to join, especially as I intend to stick with Alfa's for some time yet.
Mine is a 2004 147 JTD Turismo so not top of the range in power and performance but still lively and fun for all that. Prior to it I have had some motorbikes as well as Citroens and Beetles. Whilst I loved the Bugs I just spent too many weekends fixing them rather than getting out and about. When I first looked at buying an Alfa it was on the suggestion of my wife and I thought she must be mad.....Why would I want an Alfa - an oil burner too, they are unreliable and rot, don't they? Anyway, I had a look anyway and was smitten, what a gorgeous car, especially THAT grill, and I really understood what is meant by the expression "driver's car". It just has that something special.
Well, my 147 has not been 100% reliable but nothing I couldn't handle and no more annoying than any other car I have had. The heater control was a duffer like a few mentioned on site but that has been easily cured with a reclaimed unit for £50 and I've discovered I do have the joy of full heating, cooling, fans and even ice cold AC. One day it just wouldn't start but a new battery solved that. There was an annoying squeaking from a rear caliper piston that was seizing, also cured at the same time as the steering wheel being properly centered by adjusting the track rod ends. Apart from a couple of minor dings the body is great and no sign of rot anywhere and has flown throw the last 2 MOT's and dealership services.
So, like I said, I intend to stick with Alfa's for a while yet. I treated myself to a decent stereo with USB and Ipod connectivity which is pretty cool and far better than the old tape deck job. I fancy a GT next, especially a Diesel because I now know what a brilliant motor the JTD is, lively and not too thirsty.
