VVT Problems - help!!

Hi all,

As a newbie, I came to this forum looking for help. The whole site seems really good though!

I'm sure this must be a common one (not yet read the FAQs - apologies if it's in there)....

My 156 (2003) has just dropped in fuel economy dramatically. From an average of 35mpg+ last week to less than 20mpg today.

Alfa dealer in Knowle charged me 50 to tell me there's nothing wrong with it.

When it starts there it sounds like a deisel for a few seconds, and this seems to be getting worse.

Now: the oil was very low (and had been for a couple of weeks), but it's now topped up again.

Q - Will be troubles just go away now I've topped up the oil, or have I damages the VVT bits??

Thanks for reading, any help at all would be appreciated :-)

Strange...ok, you may have damaged something by letting you oil get low...this is a BIG no-no on Twinsparks. Only time will tell though.

But, the variator doesn't affect consumption so I wonder if your AFM or water temp sensor have gone.

I suggest you run the car for a couple of weeks and check your consumption again.

Re: VVT Problems - help!!

Thanks for the swift reply.

I managed to pinch the diagnostic report from the garage which shows air flow at 10kg/(something), and everything else on there did look ok.

The water temperature *gauge* seems fine, warms up nicely and sits mid-way on the dial after a few minutes.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see, but it's costing me a small fortune in fuel...

Thanks again - I'll post on the technical threads in future
This is a great site btw - keep it up!

Re: VVT Problems - help!!

I'd certainly be worried that you've damaged your engine, although obviously this will depend of how fast and how far your drove with the oil low. However, as Wrinx says, its difficult to see how that would effect your ecomomy. The other thing to think about is if you have a fuel leak from somewhere?
