Maybe it a rare diesal version.

I would double check the timing, especially if its jsut had a head gasket done

That would be the first port of call...who did the gasket? Did they use camlocks?

Re: 155 2l Ts

the mechanic was waiting on a timing locking kit (on special order, seemingly) after head gasket was done - should he have had this first? Or his he telling me porky pies??

Re: 155 2l Ts

It can be done without but better to have it. If the noise started straight after doing the head gasket he shouldn't have let it out the workshop!!

Sounds like the timing is out a fraction and the noise is piston and valve contact.

Re: 155 2l Ts

head gasket has been done again, head has been back to the machine shop, running sweet as a nut but lumpy at tick over!! Runs fine over 2000rpm - hydro emissions are through the roof!! Any suggestions would be appreciated as mechanic has not got a clue what's wrong with it!!
