Hi all! Considering the ALFA Plunge!

Hi all, new to the forum but is there a better place to really ask questions about a car your seriously considering buying? lol

I currently drive an 1998 E36 BMW 318I - only the 8v 4 pot, but i still think its a good car, reliable and has done me and my family well for the past 3 years. But im feeling its time for a change.

Iv always liked the ALFA 156 but as im sure everyone on here as thought or answered or even asked at some point. i am concerned over reliability. Now i have done a fair bit of homework to ensure that a) i check its service history, if it dosent have one its probably not worth it. b) cambelt every 36k/3 years - service history is very important. oil changes every 7.5k or so.

now i just want to ask about gremlins really, are there any here?

im consdering an alfa 156 2.0 TS (veloce/Lusso - preferably Veloce) or, if i find a decent one for a decent price potentially a 156 2.0 JTS (i do like the interior update) - but i am looking at 2.0 TS's more.

my budget is not massive, neither are my wages lol. the questions im wanting to ask besides common gremlins is how often does the "alfa on the side of the road" stories come true? I absolutly love the car, so im asking enthusiasts. can you advise me on anything (if i were to buy one) todo or spend on the car to ensure it remains ongoing?

every car in the world will eventually have its problems, im aware of that, with my BMW iv had to change starter motor, clutch, gearbox - thats it. not a great deal but, point is im aware things go wrong, nothing is perfect, i do service my BMW reguarly.

My other car choices are the same shape BMW but a 6-pot, but, im after something different, with abit more class. and i hate modern shape BMW's/audi's so theyre out of the question.

Thanks for any replies.

Welcome to AO

Try looking or asking in the Tech Lounge Alfa 147, 156 & GT - Alfa Romeo Forum where more 156 owners will see you your question.
